how can I get rid of dog urine smell in my carpet?
I adopted a dog a few months ago. I noticed a few days after we got him, a really bad urine smell on an area of carpet. I noticed it too late though because it was already dried up. I have tried, carpet cleaner and febreeze but it still stinks two months later! How can I make it go away?
Hi!
You’ll need an enzyme based cleaner such as Nature’s Miracle or Petzyme, the enzymes actually breakdown the proteins in the urine (feces, blood, etc). Both of these are available at big pet chains and even some Wal-Marts or Targets. The key is to let the enzymes work. Since the enzymes work while wet, let the area soak for a while, since the stain is old I would let it sit overnight. Saturate the stain and once it has sat for a while blot up with white towels…(they let you see the dirt pulled up, plus you won’t have to worry about dye transfer to your carpet). You may have to do this more than once but no more than 3 times to really elminate the stain, but it will work.
With vinegar and baking soda you have to make sure you are keeping it equal parts so as to neturalize each other, and once the spot dries vacuum the spot to remove any baking soda residue cause the grains will settle down into the underbaking of your carpet over time. (This will freshen the area, but doesn’t remove the proteins so your dog may/may not continue to “mark” this spot)
And be careful of bleach and urine; the bleach will react with the urine and make the spot smell even more like ammonia to your dog making them want to go in that spot and mark even more…
