Excerpt: The Grand Slam Cup was a tennis tournament held annually in Munich, Germany, from 1990 through 1999. The event was organized by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The ITF invited the best-performing players in the year’s Grand Slam events to compete in the Grand Slam Cup. The tournament was created in 1990 and was played on indoor carpet courts. In its earliest years, it was held in December but was later moved to the late-September/mid-October period. From 1990 through 1997, the tournament was limited to male players. A women’s championship was added in 1998 and was held simultaneously with the men’s tournament. Throughout its existence, the Grand Slam Cup was famous for paying-out the highest prize money of any tournament in tennis. The winner received U.S.$1.5 million. And according to the rules, if the tournament was won by a player who had also won a Grand Slam event that year, the winner received a bonus of U.S. $1 million. So although U.S. $1.5 million was already the biggest prize in the game, as many as four players each year (a quarter of the participants if each of the year’s Grand Slam events had had a different winner) had a chance of pocketing U.S. $2.5 million. The Grand Slam Cup, however, was not recognized by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Therefore, participants did not receive points in the world rankings maintained by the ATP, and the event was not considered an official career title. (Following discontinuation of the event in 1999, the ATP decided to give the event full recognition retroactively and added it to players’ lists of official titles.) A compromise between the ITF and the ATP was announced on December 9, 1999, by which the Grand Slam Cup was merged with the ATP World Championship (the A… More:

Excerpt: Frederick Alexander Lindemann, 1st Viscount Cherwell FRS PC CH (5 April 1886 3 July 1957) was an English physicist who was an influential scientific adviser to the British government, particularly Winston Churchill. He advocated the wartime carpet bombing of German cities, and was a strong doubter of the existence of the Nazi “V” weapons programme. Frederick was the second of three sons of Adolphus Frederick Lindemann, who had emigrated to the United Kingdom circa 1871 and become naturalised. Frederick was born in Baden-Baden in Germany where his American mother Olga Noble, the widow of a wealthy banker, was taking “the cure”. After schooling in Scotland and Darmstadt, he attended the University of Berlin. He did research in physics at the Sorbonne that confirmed theories, first put forward by Albert Einstein, on specific heats at very low temperatures. For this and other scientific work, Lindemann was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1920. Lindemann was a teetotaler, non-smoker, and a vegetarian, although Churchill would sometimes induce him to take a glass of brandy. He was an excellent pianist, and sufficiently able as a tennis player to compete at Wimbledon. At the outbreak of World War I, Lindemann was playing tennis in Germany and had to leave in haste to avoid internment. In 1915, he joined the staff of the Royal Aircraft Factory at Farnborough. He developed a mathematical theory of aircraft spin recovery, and later learned to fly so that he could test his ideas himself. Prior to Lindemann’s work, a spinning aircraft was almost invariably fatal. In 1919 Lindemann was appointed professor of experimental philosophy at Oxford University and director of the Clarendon Laboratory, largely on the recommendation of Henry Tizard who had… More:

Excerpt: Sydney, NSW Nassau, Bahamas Lleyton Glynn Hewitt (pronounced ) (born 24 February 1981) is a professional tennis player, and a former World No. 1 ranked player, from Australia. In 2000, Hewitt had won ATP titles on all three major surfaces (Hard, Clay and Grass) and reached one final on carpet. By 2001, he became the youngest male ever to be ranked number one, at the age of 20. His career achievements include winning the 2000 US Open men’s doubles, the 2001 US Open and 2002 Wimbledon men’s singles, and back-to-back Tennis Masters Cup titles (2001 and 2002). In 2005, TENNIS Magazine put Hewitt in 34th place on its list of the 40 greatest tennis players since 1965. Hewitt is known for his competitiveness and has won most of his matches with fitness, consistency and skilled footwork. Hewitt might well have followed in the footsteps of his Australian rules football-playing father Glynn. Instead, he became one of the youngest winners of an Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tournament when, as an almost unknown youngster, he won the 1998 Next Generation Adelaide International, defeating Andre Agassi in the semifinals. Only Aaron Krickstein winning Tel Aviv in 1983 and Michael Chang winning San Francisco in 1988 were younger when claiming their first ATP title. Hewitt then left Immanuel College to concentrate on his tennis career. Hewitt and fellow Australian Mark Philippoussis confer during a doubles match at the 2005 Queen’s Club Championships. In 2000, Hewitt reached his first Grand Slam final at the Wimbledon mixed doubles partnering Belgian Kim Clijsters. They lost the match 64, 76 to Americans Kimberly Po and Donald Johnson. Hewitt would later win his first Grand Slam title at the US Open when he along with Max Mirnyi claimed the men’s d… More:
