I have heard that cleaning a carpet with a “carpet cleaner” can actually harm the carpet. How do I clean my carpet, which is brand new, without harming it? I heard you have to put scotch guard or something on it…..idk please help! Thanks!
Okay I work for a flooring company and deal with these questions all day long. You shouldnt put scotchguard on your carpet if the carpet is pretty new within the last couple years it will already be treated for staining by either scotchguard, stainmaster, or r2x. If you use too many chemicals on the carpet it ruins what the carpet has already been treated for. Typically if you bought the carpet yourself you should have been given a brochure by your salesperson on what to clean what stains with. Also you should have your carpet proffesionally cleaned once a year and steam cleaning too often also ruins the carpet. Use a Mild soap mixture as follows for spot cleaning etergent solution Mix mild liquid detergent with water (no more than 1/4 teaspoon of detergent to 32 ounces of water). A clear, non-bleach liquid dishwashing detergent such as Dawn, Joy, or clear Ivory is recommended. Do not use detergents that are cloudy or creamy because they may leave a sticky residue.
If you want to know exactly how to get what out.. if you know what the stain is this link has a drop down menu you select what the stain is and it tells you how to clean it http://www.shawfloors.com/cms/Articles.aspx?DN=1128,1112,1106,29,4,Documents
Hope this was helpful!
